You have managed to gain an interview for your dream job, this is now your last chance to impress and secure the teaching job you have worked towards. Generally international schools will now request a Skype video interview with you, for them to decide if you are the correct candidate. We ask a number of recruiters their advice for the Skype interview to help you fully prepare for this stage of the process.
1. Always be prepared for any technical issues
People sometimes don't test the techincal side of things prior to the interview. This can be little things like making sure your internet connections, camera and sound are working ready for the interview. There was a time when I opened up my laptop 5 minutes prior to the interview, expecting everything to be working fine. However on this occasion there was an update needed for Skype and this updated whilst I was being phoned by the school. Fortunately for me, I had Skype on my Mobile phone so the call came through on my phone instead. This was not ideal and resulted in me being anxious. Having that feeling I was not prepared was not the ideal start.
2. Be aware of your dresscode
It is easy to forget when you do a Skype interview to dress appropriately. Remember Skype interview is just the same as a face to face interview and even though you might be in the comfort of your home, you must remember to dress professional. .
3. Avoid distractions
When you are being interviewed in your home, it is very easy to have distractions in the background. Please make sure that you are fully focused and making eye contact throughout the interview and avoid any distractions around. No television, no family members in the background. This will ensure you can stay fully focused on the task ahead.
4. Be aware of your surroundings
Always ensure that you have a good clean area when you are interviewing. Sometimes its easy to forget about your surroundings, especially what is behind you during the interview. Try to always keep in a tidy area without too much clutter behind you. You don't want the interviewer to be distracted by your surroundings and all the focus should be on you.
5. Try not to use your mobile phone
Using a laptop or desktop computer should always be an important tip to remember. As we pointed out on tip 1, if you have to use your phone then please ensure that you stand this somewhere so it is steady and supported. Please never use the phone in your hands if you have no alternative but to use your phone.
